About the Quartet

Melanie, Pete, Mickie, & Marv

Steppin’ Out is a fun and fantastic quartet that performs a sparkling mix of old-time standards with a sprinkle of gospel and doo-wop, lots of laughs and a strong dose of barbershop harmony for audiences of all ages.

Looking at the picture above, top to bottom and left to right, here's who we are...

Lead/baritone Melanie Morter has been singing barbershop harmonies more than 30 years, including stints with award-winning quartets and two choruses that won four international championships. Most recently, in addition to Steppin’ Out, Melanie has performed with the Hickory Tree chorus of Sweet Adelines.

Bass Pete Sherwood has performed a broad range of church, folk and oldies music and has sung with traditional barbershop quartets prior to Steppin’ Out. He is a member of the Morris Music Men chorus and the United in Group Harmony Association. He is also the newest member of the long-standing and popular doo-wop group, Memories of You.

Tenor Mickie Wainschel sang four-part harmony as a member of a noted women’s Sweet Adelines quartet, The Lovin' Tuneful, a leading women’s chorus as well as other women’s and mixed quartets before joining Steppin’ Out.

Baritone/lead Marv Wainschel has been singing quartet music for more than three decades. Marv is a musical arranger and sang with the international award-winning Dapper Dans of Harmony chorus.

Pete and Marv are both affiliated with the international men’s barbershop society.

(For the curious, Mickie and Melanie are sisters, Marv is married to Mickie, and Pete is not related to any of them!)

Steppin’ Out blends the nostalgia of the Americana songbook with a more-modern presentation that has proven popular from scouts to seniors, from full-stage concerts to backyard barbeques. The quartet looks forward to entertaining at your event!
